11 Iowa City businesses fail tobacco compliance checks

Out of 53 businesses licensed to sell tobacco products in Iowa City, 11 failed tobacco sales law compliance checks, which occurred from Nov. 12 to 14, according to an Iowa City press release.

The businesses that failed are:

  • Almost Paradise, 355 S. Linn
  • Black and Gold Vapors, 440 Kirkwood Ave.
  • The Convenience Store, 106 S. Linn
  • Deli Mart, 206 E. Benton
  • Deli Mart, 525 Highway 1 W.
  • Hawkeye Convenience, 2875 Commerce Drive
  • Hy-Vee Gas, 260 Stevens Drive
  • Kirkwood Liquor & Tobacco, 300 Kirkwood Ave.
  • Kum & Go, 955 Mormon Trek Blvd.
  • Kum & Go, 731 Riverside Drive
  • Up in Smoke, 208 N. Linn

According to the Iowa City Police, employees who sold tobacco products to minors were charged with simple misdemeanors and could possibly receive a $100 fine.

Underage individuals accompanied by officers in plainclothes and attempted to purchase tobacco products. Of the 53 businesses checked, 42 refused the illegal sale.
