Daily Iowan Scholarship

Bill Casey, the former longtime publisher of The Daily Iowan, started the newspaper’s scholarship program in 1987 to bring outstanding high school journalists to the University of Iowa and to the DI newsroom.

Since then, the DI has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships through the Bill Mertens Memorial Daily Iowan Scholarship.

The four-year scholarship is for up to $5,000 per academic year and is provided in two equal payments at the beginning of each semester.

The scholarship recipients are required to work in the DI newsroom in some capacity, which will be determined by the Editor. The scholarships are renewable on a semester-by-semester basis, for a maximum of four years, provided satisfactory progress has been made in both academic work and in the newsroom.
