Iowa City man accused of stealing car

An Iowa City man has been accused of stealing a car. 

Joseph John Velazquez, 35, transient address, was charged Oct. 13 with first-degree theft. 

According to the arrest affidavit, on April 24, 2019, the registered owner of a 2015 Honda Civic reported his vehicle stolen from the Chuck Smith Body Shop on Gilbert Court in Iowa City. The owner of the vehicle said he had dropped the car off at the body shop the previous day, and when the shop opened on the morning of the 24th it was not there. 

According to the affidavit, law enforcement reported the car as stolen. Velazquez was found with the vehicle in Bloomington, Indiana. The value of the vehicle was over $10,000. 

First-degree theft is a class-C felony.
