A Burlington man has been accused of possessing methamphetamine and punching a fellow inmate while in jail.

Matthew Hodges, 39, was charged Feb. 10 with third-offense possession of a controlled substance and assault causing bodily injury.

According to the arrest affidavit, Hodges was pulled over for a traffic violation when officers noticed that he appeared to be under the influence of drugs. A K9 officer alerted its handler to the presence of narcotics. Officers found two grams of methamphetamine during the search.

After being taken to the Johnson County Jail, Hodges became angry with another inmate for laying on Hodges mattress. Hodges then punched the victim in the face with a closed fist, leaving him with a bloody nose and a swollen eye.

Third-offense possession of a controlled substance is a Class-D felony.
