Things started off fast for Iowa in its 105-78 destruction of Alabama State Wednesday at Carver-Hawkeye.

After picking up a No. 20 ranking following wins over Oregon and Connecticut in the 2K Empire Classic, the Hawkeyes didn’t let up.

Iowa got out to a quick start against the Hornets, finding itself with an 18-4 advantage just over five minutes into the first half.

In the same span, the stellar Hawkeye defense forced 6 Alabama State turnovers. The Hornets finished the game with 19 turnovers, a credit to Iowa’s improved defense.

A big chunk of Iowa’s success in the first was due to its shooting from 3-point land. The Hawkeyes shot 6-of-11 from beyond the arc in the period to give themselves a 68-37 lead heading into the half.

Iowa ended up hitting its shots at a 59 percent clip with a 39 percent mark from 3-point range by the game’s end.

Joe Wieskamp and Luka Garza led the way for the Hawkeyes individually.

Garza finished with 22 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the field to go along with 5 rebounds and an assist.

Wieskamp, on the other hand, ended up with 20 points on 6-of-7 shooting (2-of-3 from 3), while also racking up 5 boards and 3 assists in 20 minutes of action.

After playing just five games at the Division-1 level, Wieskamp has continued to impress.

“He was really aggressive tonight, and that’s what we want him to be,” Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said. “He puts it on the deck, he shoots the 3, he’s aggressive on the glass – really versatile. I talked to him about it at shootaround, just be aggressive tonight. I knew he would be.”

Tyler Cook and Isaiah Moss also found their way into double digits, dropping 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Iowa will look to continue its unbeaten streak against Pittsburgh on Nov. 27 at Carver-Hawkeye.
