The Iowa women’s golf team will head down to Peoria, Arizona, for the Westbrook Spring Invitational at Westbrook Village Golf Club on Sunday and Monday.

The 2022 edition of the event will mark the 10th time Iowa has participated in the last 11 years. There was no Westbrook Spring Invitational in the 2020-21 season.

Hosted by Wisconsin, Iowa will face four Big Ten teams in the 14-team field. The Hawkeyes are playing in their second stroke play event of the spring alongside Wisconsin, Ohio State, Nebraska, and Minnesota.

Mississippi State, UNLV, Oklahoma, Washington State, Denver, College of Charleston, Notre Dame, Kansas, and Kansas State round out the nonconference field.

Freshman Paula Miranda, seniors Manuela Lizarazu and Dana Lener, and juniors Morgan Goldstein and Lea Zeitler will represent Iowa this week. Junior Jacque Galloway will play as an individual.

Iowa head coach Megan Menzel said that while she is excited to see the Hawkeyes’ abilities on the course, she is also eager to return to the tournament because of its supportive atmosphere.

Before the pandemic, the Westbrook Invitational had a unique format that allowed players to stay with local families.

“This is always a really special event,” Menzel said. “Wisconsin does a great job putting it on, and it’s in a community of people that really support the event. We used to stay in housing pre-COVID, before they changed the rules on that a little bit. So, we’ve gotten to know these families and this collection of Hawkeye fans. It’s just a really fun place to go to because there’s just a great environment around it.”

Menzel also said there is a significant contingent of Hawkeye fans at the event each year — some of whom she and her team have formed a special bond with.

“We got to stay with the same families and we’ve just remained in contact,” Menzel continued. “Saturday night, we’ll have a big dinner with them. Each team has a collection of people down there, whether they’re alums or just stepping up to help with the tournament. But that’s just always been kind of part of this event. So, it’s been really neat for us to maintain the same people every year, so it’s been really special.”

Since Iowa began competing at the Westbrook Invitational in 2012, the Hawkeyes’ best finishes have come in 2012 and 2017 when they tied for fifth place.

Menzel said the Westbrook Village Golf Course is more forgiving than some of the other tracks that the Hawkeyes play, making it an enjoyable tournament.

“It’s just a really fun golf course,” Menzel said. “A lot bigger greens, a little bit more wide open off the tee, so it just gives you a little bit more freedom. Usually the weather’s good. So, it’s just really kind of a fun golf course to go into and play and I think all of our players over the years would say it’s one of their favorite events.”

The last time Iowa participated in 2020, it finished 15th of 16 teams. Lizarazu, Goldstein, Zeitler, and Galloway all competed at the 2020 Westbrook Spring Invitational.
