Authorities are searching for a University of Iowa Ph.D. student who went missing in Canyonlands National Park in Utah earlier this week.

According to U.S. park rangers, Jonathon Hogue’s vehicle was located at Green River Overlook at Island in the Sky on Sunday.

Hogue, 33, is a graduate teaching assistant at the UI earning a Ph.D. in geography, the university said in a tweet.

“Our thoughts are with Jonathon Hogue’s family and friends,” the post said. “… We are monitoring the situation and will offer support as needed.”

Park rangers describe Hogue as a white man who is 5-foot-10, weighs 180 pounds, and has brown hair and blue eyes. He also has a tattoo on one of his biceps of the words “Ninja Penguin.”

Hogue “is a hiker and backpacker who is known to hike long distances, including off trail and scrambling,” according to a park Facebook post. “His dream was to be a park ranger.”

His planned itinerary for his park visit is unknown, according to the post.
