Coralville man accused of choking woman

Man faces domestic-abuse, firearm charges

Authorities have accused a Coralville man of choking and threatening to kill a woman.

Jerry Cook, 42, was charged Nov. 28 with first-offense domestic assault, domestic-abuse assault impeding flow of air and blood, driving while barred, and intimidation with a dangerous weapon.

According to the arrest affidavit, Cook and the woman, who have been in a relationship for several years, got into a fight that turned physical. During the altercation, Cook threw the woman to the ground, lay on top of her, and began to strangle her.

The woman told police that she could not breathe and that her jaw popped out of the socket several times during the attack, the affidavit said. Cook then loaded a shotgun, displayed it to the woman, and threatened to kill himself.

Cook later admitted to officers that he had driven earlier that day, despite having a suspended license.

Intimidation is a Class-C felony. Domestic abuse assault impeding flow of air and blood is a Class-D felony.
