Central City man accused of driving under the influence with gun in vehicle

Man faces slew of charges

Authorities have accused a Central City, Iowa, man  of driving under the influence and possessing a firearm as a felon, among other charges.

Jason Spies, 37, was charged Nov. 28 with eluding police officers, OWI, carrying weapons, dominion/control of a firearm by a felon, and third-offense possession of marijuana.

According to the arrest affidavit, Spies was driving a van erratically on the highway in the evening without headlights and refused to stop for officers in a clearly marked emergency vehicle with lights and sirens on. Passengers in the vehicle began throwing open containers of alcohol out of the windows of the van.

Spies possessed a small-caliber, loaded pistol that he surrendered upon exiting the vehicle, the affidavit said. Spies had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. Marijuana was also found in the vehicle.

Dominion/control of a firearm by a felon is a Class-D felony.
