Iowa fans reach down for high-fives during a football game between Iowa and Western Michigan at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023. The Hawkeyes defeated the Broncos, 41-10. Iowa’s record is 3-0 overall this season.

It didn’t take long for Iowa to make a statement in the second half. Forcing a three-and-out on Western Michigan’s opening drive, the Hawkeyes’ special teams unit got in on the action with a blocked punt. Defensive lineman Anterio Thompson broke through the line of scrimmage untouched, knocking the ball into the back of the end zone for a safety.

This was the first safety of the year for Iowa.
