Four Hawkeyes will start competition today in Des Moines at the Drake Jamboree.

The Hawkeyes have been impressive so far this fall, but the four players heading to Des Moines bring a whole new look to Iowa’s fall competition.

“Three of the four competing … haven’t competed in October,” said head coach Katie Dougherty.

Freshmen Adorabol Huckleby, Taylor Tamblyn, and Carin Runefelt and sophomore Montana Crawford will compete in this weekend’s fall tournament at Drake. Opponents include players from Iowa State, Kansas State, Illinois State, and Drake.

Three different countries of origin are represented, but only one year of experience is present (Crawford) among the four players competing for Iowa.

It is easy to see that the squad competing this weekend is both diverse and new. Win or lose, this jamboree is an opportunity for them to develop chemistry.

Thus far this fall, Iowa has exceeded the expectations of many, but fall tennis is about growth more than success as teams prepare for the official season in the spring. The young Hawkeyes will gain experience, something crucial as Iowa tries to gain an edge for the spring season.

Coach Katie Dougherty will look for growth this weekend as she leads her young players into competition.

“It’s going to be four doubles and four singles matches,” she said. “Eight great opportunities for these guys to get better.”
