The location of an Iowa City sushi restaurant is about to take on a whole new cuisine.

According to a press release from the Iowa City Downtown District, Takanami, 219 Iowa Ave., is scheduled to close on July 28 after being open for 16 years.

New owner, recent University of Iowa graduate Valentina Carrero, plans to open a new “Mexican Taco and Tequila Restaurant” at the location. The 22-year-old acquired the location last month and plans to open the new restaurant on Aug. 2.

In a statement on Takanami’s Facebook page, Carrero announced the change.

“As a young female, Latina business owner, it has been my dream since I was born in Colombia to open my own Hispanic restaurant, and I am excited to showcase the new restaurant to you all,” she said.
