Hawkeyes take temperature at intrasquad meet

Iowa director of track and field Joey Woody planned on seeing big performances from his athletes at the Black and Gold meet on Dec. 7. He was not disappointed.

The Gold squad won with 80 points, while the Black squad earned 73 points for second place.

Numerous Hawkeyes beat previous personal bests during the intrasquad competition, most notably senior Kevin Lewis, who finished first in the mile run with a time of 4:07.19.

“It was fun to see that men’s mile and see Kevin Lewis come out after a real long but successful cross country season to come out and have a great performance in the mile,” Woody said. “That was a big personal best in a competitive race.”

Other distance runners finished with great times including Michael Hart (2/4:15.70), Matt Butler (3/4:16.77), Brook Price (4/4:17.90), and sophomore Sam McElhiney (5/4:20.15). Iowa track and field coach Layne Anderson was very pleased with the way his runners ran, after having a lengthy cross-country season.

“Our performance today was relative to our cross-country season,” he said. “Valuable information was gained.”

The men’s side also featured events in the 60-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, 600 meters, 4×4 relay, high jump, pole vault, long jump, shot put, and weight throw.

Junior Will Teubel won the 600 meters, crossing the line at 1:18.39. Other standout performances came from junior James Harrington in the 60-meter dash with a first place run of 6.84, as well as sophomore Aaron Mallet winning the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.99.

“To be able to put up some personal records early in the season was really fun to watch,” Woody said.

While the men shone, the women’s side of the team didn’t have as many standout showings.

The women’s side featured events in the 60-meter dash, 300 meters, 600 meters, mile, 4×4 relay, high jump, pole vault, shot put, and weight throw.

Freshman Jahisha Thomas was impressive, winning the 60 meters after crossing the line at 7.93.

Assistant coach Clive Roberts, who deals with jumps as well as women’s sprints and hurdles, thought energy was lacking in the runners.

“Sometimes, it’s hard to get really jacked up for these kind of meets because you see the people day in and day out,” he said. “Energy could have been higher.”

That is not to say he was completely disappointed with his athletes.

“The girls have done some things in the past so we know what they’re capable of,” Roberts said. “Today was just an average day.”

Although Roberts was not completely impressed, Woody is excited to see what his athletes will do throughout the upcoming indoor season.

“It was definitely a good benchmark,” he said. “Some people are a bit further along, but overall, we’re pretty packed in and have a lot of great depth as well as some top-end athletes.”
