Man accused of strangling woman

A local man has been accused of choking a woman to unconsciousness.

Jose Avalos-Covarrubias, 21, was charged April 28 with domestic assault impeding air/blood and causing bodily injury.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, officers responded to a report of domestic assault. A female was reportedly found shaking and crying, and she told officials that Avalos-Covarrubias choked her until she was unconscious and hit her all over her upper body.

The woman told officials that she thought Avalos-Covarrubias was going to kill her. According to the complaint, the female did have visible injuries and told officials that she was assaulted while holding their 4-month-old daughter.

Avalos-Covarrubias and the woman live together in the apartment, the complaint said.

Domestic assault impeding air/blood and causing bodily injury is a Class-D felony.
