Iowa baseball sweeps Snowbird Classic

The Iowa baseball team had their best weekend of the season as they won all three games in the Snowbird Classic at Port Charlotte, Fla. from March 8-10.

The sometimes absent offense showed up early for the Hawkeyes in a 9-2 victory over Maine on Friday. The club tallied eleven hits and was boosted by a three-run inning in the fourth and a six-run inning in the sixth. Sophomore pitcher Sasha Kuebel collected his first win of the season by allowing only two runs off of eight hits over seven innings.

The offense didn’t let up in the Black and Gold’s Saturday game against Georgetown either. The team clobbered nine more hits in a 7-2 win. Sophomores Jake Mangler, Kris Goodman, and Jake Yacinich collected seven of the team’s nine hits and drove in four of Iowa’s runs.

“Our execution was outstanding,” head coach Jack Dahm said in a release. “We laid down bunts when we needed to and had some really good at-bats. Each game we made progress.”

Iowa saved the drama for the final game of the weekend against West Virginia on Sunday. In a game that featured three lead changes and three ties, it was the Hawkeyes who came out on top by a 6-4 score in twelve innings thanks to a two-run single from freshman Blake Hickman in the twelfth.

“We grew up a little bit this weekend,” Dahm said in a release. “But we know this was just one weekend. We’re going to continue to grow and work hard to keep this momentum going.”

Iowa will take on Nebraska-Omaha in its home opener at Duane Banks Field on March 15-17.
