Working Group Theater raises funds for new project

On Dec. 16, the community can support an entertaining cause.

The nonprofit organization Working Theater Group, which has brought actors and local musicians together to benefit local causes several times, is back at it to raise money for its project The Broken Chord — which will be produced in April by Hancher.

The group’s storytelling, poetry, and music show *Was the Word* will take place at7 p.m. in the Englert Theater, 221 E. Washington St. Monetary donations will be accepted at the door.

The show Working Theater will perform was created to help raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and its effect on caregivers and communities. This is a cause that leader Martin Andrews said was near and dear to the group’s heart.

Alzheimer’s isn’t the only problem the organization tackles.

“During the course of our three years of existence, we have created six new plays on subjects ranging from the experiences of local veterans, racial diversity in Iowa, plant closings, and labor issues,” Andrews said.

The group’s goal is to use art to benefit the community, he said.

“I think we realized that if we expect the community to support us, we have to support our community,” Andrews said. The organization has donated more than $1,500 to local groups and committees ranging from Iowa City Hospice to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program.

Andrews said that Iowa City will continue to support the organization and its mission by coming out on Dec. 16 to help support it, so that it, in turn can help the rest of the community.

This weekend, he said, the audience will experience an enjoyable evening.

“They can expect a fun and silly review of our work,” he said. “Some music. Some laughs. A good time.”
