Tiffin woman allegedly falsifies deposits

A Tiffin woman was charged Aug. 31 after she allegedly deposited empty envelopes at a Walmart ATM.

According to a complaint by Coralville police, Shelby Scales, 19, was charged after she allegedly deposited four empty envelopes and one envelope containing $1 into an ATM at Walmart, 2807 Commerce Drive. The deposits were allegedly made to an account with the University of Iowa Community Credit Union.

She allegedly claimed the deposits to be various amounts, ranging from $445.86 to $895.21, according to the complaint. After the deposits, Scales allegedly withdrew money or purchased merchandise at surrounding businesses.

The complaint said Scales allegedly admitted to making the deposits.

The total loss to the credit union was $4,759.79, according to the complaint.

Scales is charged with second-degree theft, a Class-D felony.
