Senior soccer player Morgan Showalter was been named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, according to a release.
Showalter scored on a penalty kick and helped lead the defense to a shutout 2-0 victory over Wisconsin on Oct. 29. The win was the Hawkeyes’ seventh clean sheet of the season, and the Cedar Rapids native played a key role in holding the Badgers to only three shots on goal.
Iowa’s victory over the Badgers was its 13th overall, a number tied with the 1999 squad for the most in school history.
The win also represented the fifth conference victory of the season, which ties the 2000 Hawkeyes for second-most ever by an Iowa team behind the seven-win 1999 edition of the Black and Gold.
The Hawkeyes will face Michigan State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Iowa won the first meeting between the teams, 1-0, on Oct. 2 in Iowa City.
