Iowa men’s golf up-and-down on day one

Day One at the Royal Oaks Invitational was a tale of two rounds for the Iowa men’s golf team.

The Hawkeyes fired a 4-under 280 in the first round on Monday morning, but followed that up with an 11-over 295 in the second round. Iowa ended the first two rounds at 7-over in 10th place, 24 strokes behind leader Texas A&M.

Barrett Kelpin was the best individual example of Iowa’s wild afternoon. The senior shot a 4-under 67 through the first 18 holes, then carded a 5-over 76 in round two. Kelpin went from shooting four birdies and no bogeys in the first round to one birdie and six bogeys in the second 18 holes.

Fellow senior Chris Brant tied Kelpin for the Hawkeyes’ low score on the first day at 1-over 143. Brant posted rounds of even-par and 1-over to complete the day tied for 28th.

Sophomore Steven Ihm (5-over through two rounds) will be the first Iowa golfer to tee off today, doing so at 9:50 a.m.
