Men’s tennis begins play in Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships

Will Vasos advanced to the qualifying stage of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships on Sunday in Tulsa, Okla.

The senior won two matches on Sunday to advance to the qualifying stage.

Sophomore Jonas Dierckx, who joined Vasos in Sunday competition, fell two wins short of the next stage; he was defeated by Illinois State’s Tuomas Manner.

The team went 3-1 in its matches on Oct. 1, with two wins from Vasos and one win from Dierckx.

Iowa head coach Steve Houghton said he was pleased with the team’s performance on day one of the event.

"We had a great first day with both Will and Jonas competing very well for us," Houghton said in a release.

Freshman Andres Estenssoro lost in his first match as a Hawkeye on Oct. 1, (0-6, 3-6) to Patrick O’Keefe of Radford.

The qualifying stages of both singles and doubles will begin today, where Vasos and senior Marc Bruche will need three wins in singles — and as a doubles team — to advance to the tournament’s main draw.
