Sigma Nu looked like anything but a winless team on Wednesday night.

The team notched its first win in the intramural flag-football season with a 43-26 victory over the Enginerds.

The Enginerds (2-2), which only had six players, kept up with the Sigma Nu (1-3) attack through the first three quarters but seemed to fall apart in the final period.

After a quick Sigma Nu touchdown to start the game, the Enginerds wasted no time in scoring on its first play on offense to make it a 7-6 game. Not to be outdone, Sigma Nu scored a touchdown on a 60-yard play on its second play of the possession to take a 13-6 lead.

The Enginerds then made a fatal mistake at the start of the second quarter by failing to convert on a fourth-and-30 from its own 10-yard line. Sigma Nu scored on its first play after that to push the lead to 19-6.

"We don’t regret going for it," Enginerd player Danny Ullman said. "We plugged the numbers and thought we had a good chance of making it. We were aggressive."

After putting the turnover behind it, the Enginerds stormed down the field and scored to make the score to 19-13. An interception by Sigma Nu — the only possession in which it didn’t score — ended the first half.

"We started slowly; we’ve been starting slowly all season," the Enginerds’ Alex Fischman said. "It’s something we’ve been trying to work on lately. We picked it up in the second quarter but kind of gave up at the end and just had fun."

The Enginerds started the second half by throwing an interception; Sigma Nu quickly turned the pick into a score to push the lead to 25-13. The teams traded touchdowns through the third quarter and into the fourth until the score was 37-26, favoring Sigma Nu, with five minutes left in regulation.

A chance to bring the score within one possession was blown by an Enginerds interception that Sigma Nu again turned into touchdown to bring the score to 43-26. With the game out of reach, the clock ran out with a last-second heave by the Enginerds that was picked off to seal the Sigma Nu victory.

"We really played some tough [defense] on the gridiron," Sigma Nu player Ian Mitchell said. "It was a back-and-forth game, and our training really paid off."

The Enginerds blamed the loss on missed opportunities, including three dropped interceptions — two of which occurred in the end zone.

"It was a heartbreaker," Ullman said. "We had bad communication. We were so aggressive that we all wanted the ball. It was like two [guys] going for the same thing."

Sigma Nu reflected on their lone victory in a season that didn’t go quite as planned.

"It was a good way to end the season," Mitchell said. "I think we did pretty good this year, considering our injuries. All in all, it was a fun season and we’ll come back strong next year."
