Women’s track splits for two weekend events

The Iowa women’s track and field team will compete in two meets this Saturday.

One meet takes place in Iowa and the other quite a bit farther south, in Alabama.

Assistant coach Clive Roberts and six student-athletes will travel to the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn, Ala., at Auburn University. The athletes will include the 4×4 relay and senior captain Tiffany Hendricks in the 400-meter hurdles.

The women’s throwers group and assistant coach Scott Cappos, who works with the throwers, and head coach Layne Anderson will make the trip Saturday to the Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines.

With a smaller number of athletes competing this weekend, the rest of the squad will have a relatively slow weekend in Iowa City.

The whole team is gearing up for the next two full weekends. Iowa will host the 12th-annual Musco Twilight meet at the Cretzmeyer Track in Coralville April 23, and the Drake Relays are set for April 28-30 in Des Moines.

For the athletes competing this weekend, though, it will be another chance for the Hawkeyes to improve.

Closer to campus, Anderson said the distance group, which will not compete at either meet, will continue training in Iowa City.

“We’re looking forward to getting some good work in,” Anderson said.
