GymHawks dominate podium, but lose meet

The Iowa women’s gymnastics team fell to North Carolina State on the road on Feb. 6, 194.850 to 194.375.

The GymHawks started strong on uneven bars, finishing ahead of the Wolfpack, 49.1 to 49.0, after rotation one. Freshman Tesla Cox performed a personal best of 9.775 in her home state of North Carolina.

Iowa continued to outscore North Carolina, 48.975 to 48.425, in the second rotation with the GymHawks on vault and after the third rotation on floor. Iowa remained ahead with total team scores 146.625 to 146.0.

In the fourth rotation on beam, the first three gymnasts — Cox, Jessa Hansen, and Rebecca Simbhudas — stayed on the beam, but the final three gymnasts — Andrea Hurlburt, Annie Szatkowski, and Houry Gebeshian — fell, forcing the GymHawks to count two falls in the total team score.

The falls resulted in a 1.1 point swing that boosted the Wolfpack to a win over the Hawkeyes.

Regardless, the GymHawks dominated the podium as Houry Gebeshian tied for first on vault (9.850), Jessa Hansen won bars (9.875), and Rebecca Simbhudas won beam (9.9) and all-around (39.275).
