Men’s basketball posts 111 in rout of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville

The Iowa men’s basketball team (3-3) defeated Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (1-5) on Nov. 26, 111-50, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The 61-point win was the team’s largest margin of victory in 44 years.

Edwardsville never held a lead and shot just 34 percent from the floor, while the Hawkeyes connected on 59 percent of their shots.

The biggest disparity came at the free-throw line; the Cougars shot two free throws all game. Iowa shot 38.

Freshman Zach McCabe came off the bench and was the game’s leading scorer with 16 points. The Sioux City native was 4-of-7 from beyond the 3-point line.

Iowa showed no ill effects from being without starting point guard Cully Payne, who is out six to eight weeks with a sports hernia. Junior transfer Bryce Cartwright started in place of Payne and racked up 11 points and four assists.

"I think Bryce from Day One has been spectacular," head coach Fran McCaffery said. "You always hope you get somebody of that kind of quality: He’s got a body, he’s got experience, [and] he’s not afraid."
