Men’s golf places seventh at Boilermaker Invite

A seventh-place finish at the Boilermaker Invitational brought the regular season to a close for the Iowa men’s golf team on Sunday.

The Hawkeyes missed placing in the top half of the 12-team field with a 54-hole total of 892 (plus-28). Rain caused suspended play during rounds two and three.

Illinois took first place with a 854. Fighting Illini Chris DeForest managed the best individual score with a 10-under-par 206.

Brad Hopfinger’s 220 overall led Iowa. The junior placed 11th overall, posting a final-round score of 73 (plus 1).

Sophomores Chris Brant (224) and Barrett Kelpin (225) also carded scores for the Hawkeyes. Brant tied for 25th, and Kelpin finished tied for 29th.

“We didn’t get out of our own way this weekend,” head coach Mark Hankins said in a statement. “It looked like we were still playing to the conditions from our last tournament. The fairways were softer and the greens were larger, and we just didn’t do a good job of adapting.”
