In a matchup that featured two teams with different styles of basketball, Swoosh dominated in the post, snagged rebounds, and never allowed the Swayze Express to gain momentum on streaky shooting in a 72-46 win Monday night in the Field House.

Swoosh won the opening tip and finished its first possession with an alley-oop layup. The squad never trailed the rest of the game.

Swayze struggled with its passing game and fell victim to several early turnovers that ultimately turned into points on the other end for Swoosh.

Swayze’s shooting, which heated up in the second half, also started flat. The group missed five 3-point attempts in a row, thanks in part to Swoosh’s tough perimeter defense.

Swoosh refused to give Swayze a decent look from beyond the arc.

“We did it all,” said Matt Mercer, who posted 13 points for Swoosh. “We came in knowing we played some pretty good competition last week, and I think that prepared us well for tonight.”

In the second half, the post play of Bryan Smith and Zach Furlong proved to be too much for Swayze. In turn, it opened up Swoosh’s prolific shooting game.

After allowing Swayze to get within six points, Smith blocked a weak layup by the Swayze Express and took the ball down court, scoring on a difficult layup after being fouled.

“We worked it inside a lot,” Justin Timmerman said. “We had a huge mismatch in the post with our 6-5 guy, so we exploited it all game.”

Timmerman, who added 10 points for Swoosh, including a pair of 3s, also was in on a key play in the first half that ended his team’s sloppy offense.

Driving into the lane, Furlong attracted a double team and subsequently dished the ball out to Timmerman, who made a 3-pointer from the baseline.

“They shot really well tonight, and we let them do it,” said Swayze’s Chris Goodman, who tallied six points. “We gave up too many offensive boards and didn’t rebound very well. We really needed to box out more, and stop the post men from taking advantage of our size.”

Swayze gave the more athletic Swoosh team a run in the second half. But turnovers stalled all hope for a possible comeback.

“We spaced the floor well, and moved it well at times, but cut those possessions short with turnovers,” Goodman said.

Collin Sleeper led Swoosh on offense with 17 points, several of which combated the hot shooting of Swayze.

“Outside shooting was key after their defense stepped up down low. We started nailing down 3-pointers at the same time as them, and stalled their run,” Timmerman said. “We think we can beat any team out there. I don’t know who MGR Express is, but if we played as well as we did tonight, we always have a chance.”
