Wrestler suspended

Redshirt freshman Montell Marion has been suspended indefinitely from the Iowa wrestling team for his alleged involvement in an incident in Indianola on Sunday.

According to an Indianola police report, the 20-year-old was under the influence of alcohol and admitted to using a chair from a friend’s apartment to shatter the windows in two vehicles.

The report also said Marion first lied about being responsible for the damages in order to stay out of trouble because he is on a Hawkeye wrestling scholarship. He later said he would pay for the damages if it kept him from being charged.

In a statement released Thursday, Iowa head coach Tom Brands expressed his displeasure with the reported incident.

“I’m very disappointed in the recent actions of Montell Marion,” he said. “I am suspending him from the team for an indefinite period of time. Montell has already expressed regret for his actions. I will meet with Athletics Director Gary Barta and Associate Athletics Director Fred Mims to determine what course of action will be taken.”
