A man who died from a fall while hiking near Navajo Peak in Colorado has been identified as an Iowa City resident and UI law student.

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office identified the 31-year-old as James Napier, according to local news sources.

According to a media release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Napier was climbing a boulder and slipped and fell while hiking with his girlfriend, who has not been identified.

The girlfriend, a physician, assessed that Napier had no pulse after hiking down to where he fell. She said he sustained “significant head trauma and could not be resuscitated.”

The Sheriff’s Office said the girlfriend then hiked five miles back to notify authorities. There was no cellphone service at the site of the accident.

Authorities said the 911 call was received around 1:30 p.m. July 7 from a camp host at the Pawnee Campground. Because of inclement weather, Napier’s body couldn’t be recovered until July 8. The Sheriff’s Office said authorities don’t suspect foul play.
