The Iowa women’s tennis team competed in three matches over spring break,  going 1-2. They are now 1-3 in the conference, 7-6 overall.

The Hawks faced No. 13 Michigan in Ann Arbor on March 13, the team’s first competition during the break and also the highest ranked team it has faced all year.

Michigan jumped ahead early and ended up sweeping Iowa in the  match, 7-0.

Iowa recovered from its loss to the Wolverines in its March 17 matchup against UNLV in Las Vegas. The Hawks came-away with a 4-1 victory against the Rebels.

Iowa was able to secure the doubles point against UNLV and head into the singles portion with an edge.

At the No. 2 doubles spot, senior Morven McCulloch and junior Annette Dohanics defeated Santa Shumilina and Paola Artiga (6-3). The senior/freshman duo of Katie Zordani and Zoe Douglas secured the doubles point for the Hawks when they swept UNLV’s Iren Kotseva and Alexis Garrett (6-0).

Iowa carried its strong performance into singles play with three seniors contributing victories to lock up the match for the Hawkeyes.

At the No. 1 spot in singles, senior Shelby Talcott defeated UNLV’s Shumilina (6-2, 6-1). Zordani overcame Mercedes Lopez Valez in straight sets, (6-4, 6-4). Fellow senior Ellen Silver clinched the match with a win at the No. 6 singles spot when she handed UNLV’s Garrett a loss (6-0, 6-4.)

Iowa finished its spring-break play at home Sunday, hosting No. 52 Indiana.

Iowa started the match strong, earning the doubles point to go up by a score of 1-0. However, Indiana battled back and defeated the Hawkeyes, 4-2.

Zordani and Douglas came away with another victory at the No. 3 spot in doubles. They finished their match first, putting up a win over the Hoosiers’ Shannon Murdy and Stephanie Smith (8-2).

McCulloch and Dohanics also won in doubles; the No. 2 duo clinched the doubles point for the Hawks when they ousted Indiana’s Katie Klyczek and Kim Schmider (8-3). This puts McCulloch and Dohanics at 3-1 as a doubles team.

Talcott earned another win at the No. 1 position in singles, going 2-1 in singles over the course of the break. She defeated Indiana’s Klyczek in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). The victory improves her overall record to 9-3 at the No. 1 spot.

The Hawkeyes are slated to face Drake on Wednesday. Iowa defeated Iowa State earlier this season, and the team will try for the victory against Drake to win the state.
