Group charged for burglary

Authorities have accused a Cedar Rapids man and a North Liberty man with entering a residence and choking a man.

Jeffery Schmelzer, 23, and Michael Halapua, 26, was charged Oct. 31with first-degree burglary.

According to online court documents, authorities were called to a residence in regards to an assault.

Schmelzer entered the dwelling while people were present and into the basement.

Schmelzer reportedly went behind a man and choked him.

Halapua also entered the residence and went to the basement. He allegedly assaulted the man and caused bodily harm.

The man had a swollen left eye and a cut on his right hand.

First-degree burglary is a Class-B felony.
