Iowa City man charged with several drug and falsifying offenses

An Iowa City man has been charged after allegedly lying about his identity to police.

Nelson Williams, 26, was charged on Monday with possession of a controlled substance, OWI, driving while barred, tampering with records, malicious prosecution, and giving false information to law enforcement.

According to a police complaint, officers responded to the 2100 block of Davis Street after receiving a report of an intoxicated driver. According to a witness, the driver appeared to be on drugs and drinking. Officers stopped Williams at the 2100 block of Bancroft Street. Williams allegedly told the officers his name was Ronnie Williams. After a short investigation, officers reportedly discovered he had lied about his name and that he had used this false name before.

Officers also discovered that he is barred from driving until May of 2015, and after a consent search of his vehicle a bag of marijuana was allegedly found.

Second-offense OWI, tampering with records, and driving while barred are aggravated misdemeanors. Possession of a controlled substance, malicious prosecution, and giving false information to a law-enforcement officer are serious misdemeanors.
