Man follows family member to find girlfriend

A local man was accused of allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

Alfonso Reid Jr., 40, was charged Sunday with third or subsequent offense of domestic abuse assault.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, police officials responded to a call of a “disturbance/fight in progress.” Officers allegedly made contact with both Reid and a female, later identified as his girlfriend.

An investigation revealed that Reid had been living with the woman since the last week of January 2013. On Sunday, officials revealed Reid had been allegedly drinking for the past day and was looking for his girlfriend who did not wish to speak to him, the complaint said.

Reid allegedly followed a family member to the location of his girlfriend, even after the family member told Reid to not follow and to go away, the complaint said.

Reid and the woman began arguing face to face about their relationship and about a phone.

According to the complaint, Reid admits to reaching out and grabbing the woman to “bring her close to talk to her,” which resulted in a brief physical struggle.

Reid has had three previous convictions of domestic assault.

Third or subsequent offense of domestic abuse assault is a class-D felony.
