Two members of the Iowa men’s swimming and diving team were selected to compete in the NCAA meet in Indianapolis on March 28-30, along with two relays that qualified during the Big Ten championships.

Sophomore Grant Betulius was selected for his time of 46.70 in the 100 backstroke. The second Hawkeye selected was freshman Roman Trussov in the 200 breaststroke, in which he finished at 1:55.84. Both times came when the pair competed in the Big Ten meet Feb. 27-March 2.

Betulius’s time is the best in school history. He will also compete in 200 back, and Trussov will have the opportunity to compete in the 100 breast.

The selection came after the NCAA Division I Championship/Sports Management Cabinet adopted a new process for swimmers. The new rule states a team must have at least one swimmer invited for an individual event to be eligible to swim one or more relays.

Previous years, a team could qualify for the meet solely with a relay. The change gives opportunity for more competitive events and increasing the number of schools represented.

The first relay to qualify was the school-record breaking team of the 200-medley relay consisting of Betulius, sophomore Korey Schneider, and seniors Byron Butler and Jordan Huff. The quartet finished in fifth place at 1:25.82. Junior Andrew Marciniak will be competing in place of Schneider in Indianapolis, though.

Iowa also qualified in the 400-medley relay while simultaneously breaking the school record with the quartet of Betulius, Trussov, Butler, and Huff. The team finished third place at Big Tens with a time of 3:10.18.
