Hawkeyes head to Sunshine state for spring baseball

The Iowa baseball team will begin their weekend series in Port Charlotte, Fla., with a matchup against Maine today.

The other two games for the team will be against Georgetown on Saturday and West Virginia on March 10. Iowa will send sophomore Sasha Kuebel to the mound today, senior Matt Dermody on Saturday, and a currently undecided pitcher on March 10.

After finishing 6-0 with a 2.67 ERA last season, Kuebel has not gotten off to the best start in his second campaign. The St. Louis native is 0-3 with a 4.00 ERA, but he has a chance to earn his first win of the season against a 6-9 Maine team.

The Black Bears have lost three straight heading into today’s contest and have been on an offensive cold spell — the team hasn’t scored more than 3 runs in any of the contests.

Georgetown sports a 5-4 record. But the Hoyas have been hot lately — all five of the wins have come in the last seven games. The last three wins have each been by 1 run.

One advantage the Hawks will have against West Virginia appears to be pitching. Iowa has the third best team ERA in the Big Ten at 3.00, and the Mountaineers have a less impressive team ERA of 4.42.

The squad will take on Nebraska-Omaha at Banks Field on March 15-17.
