Hawkeye baseball goes 2-3 over the weekend

The Iowa baseball team improved its record to 4-3 after taking two of three games at the Kleberg Bank College Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas, over the weekend.

In the Feb. 22 game, the Hawkeyes fell to an undefeated No. 14 ranked Oklahoma despite matching the number of hits as the Sooners. Trying to rally back in the ninth inning junior Taylor Zeutenhorst and sophomore Kris Goodman both earned singles.

Goodman posted three singles but Zeutenhorst was the only one to cross the plate in the 3-1 loss.

The Black and Gold bettered themselves the next day in a tenth inning victory over New Mexico. They scored six times on 12 hits in a 6-2 victory.

Goodman and sophomore Jake Yacinich went 2-for-5, both earning runs.

"I was happy the entire game with the way our guys competed," Iowa head baseball coach Jack Dahm said in a release. "We learned a lot about our team today. That is how we are capable of playing. We continued to compete and stuck to our game plan."

Iowa finished the weekend with a 4-2 victory over host team Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the Feb. 24, game. The Hawkeyes had seven hits with junior Taylor Kaufman going 2-for-3 while junior Keith Brand was 1-for-4 with two RBI’s and a run score.

"[Brand’s] a battler,"Dahm said in a release. "You know you’re going to get a quality at-bat from Keith when he’s up there. He had three at-bats, hit every ball hard, and the one that fell was with the bases loaded, so it was a clutch hit."

The Hawkeyes will return to action on March 1, for the Millard Management Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence, Kan., where they’ll take on Eastern Michigan.
