Hawkeye baseball drops two of first three games

Hawkeyes drop two of first three games of the season.

The Iowa baseball team dropped two out of three games to Austin Peay over this past weekend.

The Hawkeyes struggled offensively in the first game with only three hits in the Feb. 15 contest. The Governors used back-to-back 2-run innings to down the Black and Gold, 4-2. Sophomores Jake Yacinich and Nick Day had RBI singles in the loss.

Things turned around in a big way for the squad on Feb. 16; it scored 13 runs on 15 hits in a 13-1 blowout. Senior catcher Dan Sheppard went 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs and a run in the Hawkeyes’ first victory of the season.

“We learned a lot about ourselves,” head coach Jack Dahm said in a release. “We showed a lot of signs of being a good team. We were outstanding in all facets of the game on Saturday. Unfortunately that didn’t carry over into the next day.”

The offense continued to get hits in the third game of the series on Sunday but couldn’t push runs across the plate. The Hawks connected for 8 hits in the 6-1 loss. The only run of the game for Iowa was a solo home run by Day.

“We had our opportunities but couldn’t get those hits in crunch time,” Dahm said. “We weren’t the aggressors today, and we kind of set the tone early defensively by not being more aggressive.”

Iowa will return to the diamond to take part in the Kleberg Bank College Classic from Friday through Feb. 24 in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Hawkeyes will face off against Oklahoma, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and New Mexico.
