Iowa men’s golf heads west for Big Four Match Play Championships

The Iowa men’s golf team is traveling to the Sun Devil state to take on Iowa State, Drake and Northern Iowa in the Big Four Match Play Championships on Saturday.

The Hawkeyes won the tournament last year, beating Iowa State by six strokes.

The tournament is the second of the year for Iowa; the squad  competed in the Big Ten Match Play Championships last week, placing third.

“It felt good to get back on the horse and get under pressure situations,” said Joseph Winslow.

The tournament takes place at the Lone Tree Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz. Last week, the Hawkeyes were in Florida. Regardless of location, the tournament last week helped the team get back into competition.

“We have a better feel for competition,” head coach Mark Hankins said. “We should carry a little bit of that preparation and confidence over right into this tournament.”

The tournament provides the chance to beat rival Iowa State, which gives Iowa native Steven Ihm a chance to play against some familiar opponents.

“I kind of know guys from all the teams. It’s nice playing with people you know and having that competition between them. It’s always nice to beat them,” Ihm said.
