Iowa golfers take third in Big Ten match play

The Iowa men’s golf team placed third in this past weekend’s Big Ten Match-Play Championships.

The Black and Gold went 9-5-1 in individual play and 2-1 in team play en route to their highest finish at the event since 2010, when they also placed third.

Iowa began the tournament on a bye, then defeated Purdue 4-1, backed by close 2&1 victories by Steven Ihm and Brian Bullington.

No. 7 seed Michigan State, 3-2, upset the Hawkeyes in the semifinals. Freshman Nate Yankovich dominated his individual match of the round, defeating Gareth Blease, 7&5. Joseph Winslow won Iowa’s other match against the Spartans.

Iowa bounced back against Ohio State in the third place match, winning 3.5-1.5. Ihm halved his match against Boo Timko, but a 6&5 win from Brian Bullington paired with 2&1 wins by Winslow and Vandersee, clinched the win for Iowa.

The squad will return to action on Saturday to take on Iowa State, Drake, and Northern Iowa for the Big Four Championships in Chandler, Ariz.
