Iowa women’s track gives strong showing at intrasquad

The Iowa women’s track team competed in the annual Black and Gold intrasquad meet on Dec. 1.

Khanishah Williams was the standout on the team, winning two events. Williams first won the high jump competition with a mark of 5 feet, 10.75 inches, which was 5.25 inches higher than the other two competitors, Adatayo Oladele-Ajose and Zinnia Miller. Williams also won the 60-meter hurdles, with a time of 9.13 seconds.

“To jump a lifetime best and have three great jumps at 6 feet speaks to where she is and what her potential is this year,” head coach Layne Anderson said.

The Hawkeyes also saw some impressive performances by throwers on the team. Ashlyn Gulvas won the weight throw with a throw of 59 feet, 5.50 inches. Captain Jasmine Simpson came up just short of winning with a throw of 58 feet, 6.75 inches.

Overall, Anderson was happy about his team’s outing and outlook on the upcoming season.

“We got some things to work with,” Anderson said. “When we spend four, five, six weeks getting better, we want to take the next step.”

The Hawkeyes will get their first shot at an official competition when the squad hosts the Iowa Open on Jan. 12, 2013.
