Iowa softball’s Massey named B1G Pitcher of the Week

Sophomore hurler Kayla Massey was named Co-Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on Monday for her performances against Michigan State this past weekend in East Lansing, Mich.

Massey went 2-0 in two starts against the Spartans, posting an ERA of 0.50 and allowing only 1 run on 10 hits in 14 innings.

This is the first time Massey has been given the honor; she shared it with Wisconsin’s Cassandra Darrah, an Iowa native.

Massey won the first game on April 21 by posting a complete-game shutout and giving up just 4 hits. The sophomore then gave up 1 run on 6 hits in seven innings of work the following day.

Massey is now 10-9 on the season with a 2.43 ERA, placing her sixth overall in the Big Ten in the category.

This is the first time an Iowa pitcher has been given the honor since Chelsea Lyon was named Pitcher of the Week on April 25, 2011.

Massey’s award is Iowa’s third conference nod of the season; infielder Megan Blank has been named Freshman of the Week twice.
