Hawkeye baseball posts win in weather-shortened weekend

The Iowa baseball team defeated South Dakota State, 6-1, on April 14 in Omaha, Neb.

Starting pitcher Sasha Kuebel led the Hawkeyes by throwing 8 innings of 2-hit baseball. Kuebel gave up a solo home run to Jackrabbit first baseman Aaron Machbitz in the fourth inning, and responded by sitting down 12 of the next 13 batters he faced. The freshman’s third win of the year was his first since he spun a 3-1 Hawkeye victory over Northwestern on March 25.

The Hawkeyes scored 2 runs in the third inning without the ball leaving the infield. Eric Toole and Andrew Host started the inning with a bunt single and a walk, respectively, and both advanced one base on a passed ball two batters after Host. Jake Yacinich grounded out to second base to drive in Toole, and Host scored on bunt single from Jake Mangler.

Toole and fellow outfielder Phil Keppler led Iowa’s offense with 2 hits apiece, and three other Hawkeyes recorded a hit against the Jackrabbits.

Iowa’s second game of the scheduled doubleheader against Creighton was canceled due to bad weather.

The team’s next game is on Wednesday, when the Black and Gold host Bradley at 6:05 p.m. at Duane Banks Field.
