Stoughton earns back-to-back Big Ten honors

Freshman swimmer Becky Stoughton was chosen for her second-consecutive Big Ten weekly award, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Stoughton claimed Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors for her performance against Ohio State and Notre Dame at the Shamrock Invitational on Jan. 27-28.

The Peoria, Ill., native recorded four individual victories and posted NCAA "B" qualifying times in the 500 and 1,650 freestyles, the 200 backstroke, and 400 individual medley. Her time of 4:47.28 minutes in the 200 backstroke was a career-best, and it is the second-best mark in school history.

Stoughton also swam in the 800-freestyle and 400-medley relays, which placed second and fifth, respectively.

The announcement marks Stoughton’s fourth Big Ten honor this season. She was named Freshman of the Week on Jan. 24 and Dec. 10 and claimed Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 8. She was also chosen as the Division-I National Swimmer of the Week by collegeswimming.com on Nov. 8.

Stoughton will return to competition on Thursday, when the Hawkeyes travel to Cedar Falls to take on Northern Iowa. The dual is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
