Iowa wrestler Matt McDonough was named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday, according to a release.
McDonough beat Minnesota’s Zach Sanders, 7-1, to lead the Hawkeyes to a 19-17 victory over the Gophers — and reclaim the No. 1 spot in InterMat’s 125-pound rankings. It was the fifth win of his career over Sanders.
McDonough scored two takedowns and a reversal in the match and kept Sanders on the mat for the entire third period. He racked up 2:56 of total riding time.
The Marion native is 22-1 on the season, has won 14-straight matches, and leads the team with nine pins. This is the second weekly honor of his career.
Iowa will take the mat on Feb. 5 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena against Wisconsin at 1 p.m.
