Former Iowa linebacker and defensive lineman Aaron Kampman will be awarded the 2012 Robert D. Ray Pillar of Character Award, according to a release.

The award is given to individuals that "consistently demonstrate good character as a visible role model," the release said. It’s named after former Gov. Robert D. Ray and is presented by Character Counts in Iowa.

"I am humbled … and I am honored that this recognition will be taking place in my home state of Iowa," Kampman, a Cedar Rapids native, said in the release. "As a husband, father, son, brother, friend, and teammate, I strive to emulate what I have witnessed in the great men of noble character in my own life — namely, my father."

The 32-year-old played at Iowa from 1998-2001 and finished his career with 342 tackles (the 11th-best mark in Iowa history), 18 sacks, and 3 interceptions. The Green Bay Packers picked him up in the fifth round of the 2002 NFL draft; he played at Lambeau Field for eight years and was a two-time Pro Bowl selection (2006 and 2007). Kampman has been playing for Jacksonville for the past two years but has been hampered by injury and played 11 combined games.

Kampman will accept the Ray Award in West Des Moines in April.
