Iowa City City Councilors voted to prohibit parking adjacent to a curb extension in its first consideration Tuesday.
The ordinance would make it illegal for commercial vehicles to park adjacent to a curb extension.
The City Code prohibits parking within 15 feet of an intersection, but the proposal states the curb extensions often go beyond 15 feet from the intersection.
According to city officials, prohibiting parking adjacent to a curb extension will alleviate the problems taxi cab drivers run into at night and reduce safety concerns.
Ordinances require three considerations; city councilors approved the first consideration on a 7-0 vote.
