Iowa’s Phelan named Big Ten swimmer of the week

Senior men’s swimming captain and All-American Ryan Phelan was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday after a dominating performance against Michigan State this past weekend.

Phelan helped the Hawkeyes float to a 202-91 win over the Spartans by placing first in the 50 and 100 freestyles.

His time of 20.20 in the 50 free matched his pool record.

Phelan also helped the Hawkeyes place first in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle. The quartet of Phelan, Dustin Rhoads, Duncan Partridge, and Paul Gordon posted a time of 1:30.60 in the 200 medley. He also helped Sean Swibes, Gordon, and Partridge win the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:03.86.

The Cedar Rapids native said he was flattered to be given the first weekly award of his career, and he was happy his name was even in the conversation for the honor.

"It’s pretty neat," he said. "I’m honored — there were a lot of great swimmers last weekend, which made for some tough choices. I feel great."

Iowa will return to the pool this week to take on Minnesota at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center on Nov. 4.
