Field hockey’s Barnett wins Iowa’s sixth weekly award

Junior midfielder Jessica Barnett won her second-consecutive Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award on Tuesday.

Barnett scored three goals for her first career hat-trick while leading the No. 11 Hawkeyes to a 5-2 win at Ball State on Oct. 28.

"She’s very competitive," head coach Tracey Griesbaum said. "She’s super athletic. Her level of determination and her pride in what she is doing — and what the team is about — puts her in a position to dominate. If she executes, she has the ability on any given day."

The native of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, has won three of the last four Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week awards. Prior to this season, she hadn’t won any.

She’s the first Hawkeye to win three weekly awards during a season since Kristy Gleason accomplished the feat in 1992.

Barnett has posted a point in each game of Iowa’s ongoing six-match win streak, and she has had a goal in five of them. She scored multiple goals in three of the six games.

Barnett and the No. 4-seeded Hawkeyes will play No. 5-seed Indiana in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday.
