Hawkeye golfers struggle at U.S. Amateur

Day two of the U.S. Amateur Championship saw a delay of more than three hours Tuesday morning as thunderstorms swept through the playing area in Wisconsin.

As a result, more than 100 golfers — including Iowa’s Jed Dirksen — will play their second round of stroke play this morning. Dirksen’s second-round tee time wasn’t available as of Tuesday night.

Fellow Hawkeye Ian Vandersee did manage to get his second round in on Tuesday, finishing at 3-over 73. The redshirt freshman converted four birdies on Tuesday as opposed to only one on Monday. Vandersee improved his 18-hole score by five strokes after shooting a 78 in the first round.

However, it appears Vandersee won’t move on to match play — he was 17 strokes behind the leader when play was suspended Tuesday night because of darkness. After two rounds of stroke play, he holds a score of 9-over 151 and is tied for 261st.

Former Iowa golfer Vince India struggled during his second round. The senior from a year ago ended the day 9-over after recording three bogeys and three double bogeys. Through his two rounds of stroke play, India had two birdies while finishing with 13 bogeys or double bogeys.
