Mason updates UI on legislative cuts, funding

University of Iowa President Sally Mason highlighted the university’s budgetary outcome for fiscal 2012 following this year’s Legislative session in an e-mail to the university community Wednesday.

Mason noted the 3.6 percent cut in general funding to the UI, $7.9 million less than last year. She also pointed out the $1.3 million for continued support to the Iowa Flood Center as well as the $1 million reduction in the state Board of Regents’ designated area of the Grow Iowa Values Fund, now set at $1.5 million.

“This was an extraordinary year when compromise was difficult to achieve,” Mason wrote in the e-mail. “People who serve in Iowa’s citizen Legislature are underappreciated as public servants. I hope you will join me in saying thank you to all our elected officials for their hard work and sacrifice they have made on behalf of Iowans and the University of Iowa.”

Among the legislative funding decisions, Mason noted the $29 million allotted over four years to the Dental Science Building and $2 million a year for fire safety and ADA compliance.
