Iowa assistant coach named to U.S. Pan Am team

Hawkeye assistant track coach Scott Cappos, who works with the throwers on the Iowa men’s and women’s teams, received a prestigious honor on May 6.

Cappos was named an assistant coach for the 2011 United States Pan American Junior Athletics Championship team, also known as the Pan Am Junior Games. Cappos will be a member of the men’s staff in charge of coaching the throwers.

The Pan Am Junior Games are always held the year before the summer Olympic games. This year, they will be held on July 22-24 in Miramar, Fla. The games are a multi-sport event featuring competitors from selected nations.

Cappos joined the Iowa coaching staff in 1997. In 2007, he was named men’s Midwest Region Throws Coach of the Year. Under Cappos, 17 Hawkeyes have been crowned All-Americans, and 21 have been Big Ten champions. Since his arrival, 20 school records have been broken in the field events.

Cappos is no newcomer to the games. In 1995, he participated in the Pan American Games, which were held in Argentina.
